If you didn’t file for your tax credits in previous years it may not be too late to go back and claim them. For the IRS you have three years from the due date to file a return to obtain a refund from prior years. So you have until April 15, 2023 to claim tax refunds for your 2019 tax return (which originally was due on April 18, 2020).
This is especially important if you have kids and did not file for last year’s tax return (2021 taxes). The Child Tax Credit did not require you to have earned income and can be worth up to $3,600 if you did not receive the advance payments. There is money available if you did not work and had dependent children. Make sure that you check that you filed for 2021.
You will need to have your tax documents (W-2s, 1099s, etc.) from that year to make sure that your claim is correct. If you think you might be eligible for a refund make sure you check so you do not miss out on money that belongs to you.
Only some tax preparers are willing to help prepare prior year tax returns, if you need someone to help prepare prior years, make sure they are aware before you get started.
