Adjusted Gross Income or AGI is requested by tax software companies to help prove your identity when you are filing your taxes. It may also be requested when you try to look up the status of your tax return or refund with the IRS or state tax agency.
You can find this information a number of ways.
Easiest way to get your last year AGI
If you have a copy of your last year’s tax return you can easily look at the forms to find your AGI. It is a good idea to always keep a copy of your prior year tax returns, either as a paper copy or a digital pdf for your records.
On your last year’s federal tax return (the 2021 tax return filed in 2022) you will find your AGI on line 11.
If this will be the first time that you file a tax return, you will want to enter zero ($0) as your AGI.
Other ways to get your last year AGI
If you do not have a copy of your last year tax return, you can always request it from your tax preparer or if you filed using software last year, log back in to get a copy.
If you cannot get a copy from your tax preparer, you can also use the IRS’ Get Transcript tool. Once you login using the IRS’ identity verification, you can opt to get your prior year AGI. You will need to either have an IRS account or use ID.me to verify your identity.
If you cannot use the tool, check out our resource on how to get a copy of your prior year tax return here.
